Common motorcycle dealer fees
| Quote line | What it may mean | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Freight / destination | Shipping from the manufacturer, a dealer charge, or a combination | Manufacturer-published amount for the exact model and the dealer's line item |
| Setup / prep / PDI | Assembly, inspection, fluids, battery service or dealer preparation | Exact work, price and whether it is already reflected elsewhere |
| Doc / admin / processing | Dealer paperwork or processing charge | Dealer disclosure, applicable state rules and the final OTD impact |
| Accessories | Installed parts such as guards, luggage, exhausts or electronics | Itemized parts and labor; whether each item was requested |
| Protection products | Service contract, GAP, GPS, theft, tire/wheel or appearance package | Price, term, exclusions, cancellation terms and whether it is optional |
| Tax, title, registration | Government-required charges based on location and vehicle use | Official state/local source and whether the dealer separated these from its own fees |
The word “freight” is especially easy to misunderstand. A manufacturer may publish a destination charge, while the dealer worksheet may show a different freight amount. That difference is not automatically unlawful, but it should be visible and evaluated inside the total OTD—not presented as if every dollar came from the manufacturer.
2026 powersports pricing transparency: why the written total matters
Pricing transparency is receiving increased attention across vehicle retail. In March 2026, the Federal Trade Commission warned 97 auto dealership groups that advertised vehicle prices must reflect the price consumers are actually required to pay, including mandatory fees, while distinguishing required government charges such as taxes. The FTC identified practices such as omitting required fees, advertising conditional discounts as broadly available, conditioning an advertised price on dealer financing, and requiring additional items not reflected in the advertised price as examples of potential deceptive-pricing concerns. See the FTC's March 2026 dealer-pricing warning.
The powersports industry is discussing the same issue. The National Powersports Dealer Association published a 2026 pricing-transparency resource addressing freight, handling and preparation charges and the tension created when manufacturer MSRP excludes costs that may later appear in a dealer transaction. NPDA also hosted dealer guidance specifically discussing how FTC pricing activity may affect powersports advertising, freight, setup and documentation charges. See the NPDA Pricing Transparency Resource Center.
Get the real OTD price before you visit the dealership
If a listing shows an attractive price but not the complete total, ask for an itemized written quote before making a trip or negotiating from a monthly payment. A clear request makes it easier to compare multiple dealers using the same numbers.
Hi, I’m interested in the [YEAR / MAKE / MODEL / STOCK NUMBER]. Before I make the trip, please send me the complete written out-the-door price with each amount itemized: vehicle selling price, freight/destination, setup/prep/PDI, documentation or processing fee, dealer-installed accessories or protection products, taxes, title/registration, and any other required charge. Please also identify any discount or advertised price that depends on dealer financing, a trade-in, loyalty, military/student eligibility, or another condition. I am looking for the total OTD with no optional products unless I specifically request them. Thank you.
If a dealer will not provide an itemized written total, you can still decide whether to continue, but do not treat an advertised price or monthly-payment quote as a substitute for the complete deal. Once you receive the quote, use OTD Guard to compare the entered charges and identify what needs verification.
Are motorcycle dealer fees negotiable?
Government taxes, title charges and registration fees generally are not set by the dealer. Dealer-imposed charges, optional products and the vehicle selling price can be economically flexible even when a dealer says a specific line cannot be removed. The practical question is not only “Will you waive this fee?” but “What written OTD will you accept with no unrequested products?”
A dealer may leave a doc or setup line unchanged and lower the selling price instead. From the buyer's perspective, the resulting OTD can matter more than the accounting label. Keep financing separate: a lower selling price can still become a costly deal if the APR, term or amount financed changes.
How to compare motorcycle quotes correctly
- Match the exact model year, trim, color and factory options.
- Ask each dealer for a written buyer's order or itemized OTD quote—not a monthly-payment promise.
- Use the same cash, rebate and financing assumptions for every quote.
- Separate selling price, manufacturer-published freight, dealer charges, optional products and government charges.
- Compare financing by APR, term, amount financed and total of payments. Confirm eligibility before counting a promotional rate.
- Check that the final contract matches the accepted written quote.
If the numbers do not reconcile, ask for a revised itemization. An unexplained difference is a reason to slow down; it is not, by itself, proof of fraud.
Questions to ask before signing
- What is the exact vehicle selling price before fees?
- Which freight amount is published by the manufacturer, and which amount is set by this dealer?
- Which products are optional, and what does the OTD become without them?
- Are any discounts conditional on dealer financing, military/student status, loyalty, trade-in or another requirement?
- What are the APR, term, amount financed and total of payments?
- Can I take the itemized paperwork home or review it without changing the offer?

Motorcycle dealer fee FAQ
Are motorcycle dealer fees negotiable?
Some dealer-imposed charges or the selling price may be negotiable; government charges generally are not controlled by the dealer. Negotiate and compare the complete written OTD.
Is a motorcycle destination charge the same as dealer freight?
Not necessarily. Check the manufacturer page for its published amount and compare it with the dealer's exact line. Ask the dealer to explain any difference.
Can a dealer require an extended warranty or protection package?
Requirements and disclosures depend on the product, lender, location and facts. Ask for the requirement in writing, request the deal without the product, and do not assume a verbal claim is a manufacturer or government mandate.
Should I negotiate the fee or the OTD?
Usually the complete written OTD is the clearer target. A dealer can move value between the selling price and fee lines, so compare the net result while preserving the same vehicle, products and financing assumptions.
